"Question: What's your opinion on how much wedding photography should cost compared to the entire wedding budget?

Answer: There's no real answer as to how much you should really be spending on your wedding photography, but as a guideline I would say about 10% of your total wedding budget. I have seen MANY brides make the mistake of spending a TON of money on the wedding day festivities, locations, attire and decorations, but skimped on photography. As a result, they hired a photographer with poor equipment and insufficient wedding photography knowledge, and they received sub-par quality photos which they regret later. All that money and effort spent on making everything perfect will never be remembered the way when they should through the photos for the rest of their lives.

I always communicate to my clients from the beginning: it is important when choosing a dress, location, and flowers to keep photography in mind. If you plan to go all out with your wedding, you may want to spend a little more money hiring a talented photographer who will be able to creatively capture the location and all of the beautiful people that you spent so much time and effort in bringing together, but balance your budget carefully."

What a memorable day! The weather was very unpredictable, just like Wendell and Kat. Wendell's preparation was a little bit intense and Kat was so relaxed, Wendell was early to church and Kat was late, it was drizzling when we started our photo shoot but turned around later on. But in the end everything turned out right..great job Kat and Wendell, and, congratulations!

Another perfect day, another perfect wedding. There is so much love in the air that the rain simply won't ruin such a memorable event. Everyone can take great looking photos given the right camera, in this case, the Nikon D40 digital SLR. It's a consumer's dream-come-true camera (relatively inexpensive, light weight, delivers great skin tone, etc.) for capturing your kid's precious moments. Although there are also other great other cameras out there at the same price range, I recommend Nikon for it produces great skin tones right out of the bat.

Pocket cameras are okay when your snowboarding, kayaking, taking a snapshot, taking a landscape or object photos, or just being stealthy but it doesn't help that much when your photographing kids that would rather play than pose for a quick snapshot, so you have to have a fast camera. You can take all the pictures you like with a pocket camera, but if you can't capture those precious moments, then what's the use.

Editing is another story. You can make anything you want with your photos...black and white, sepia toned, modern antique, you name it, you're only limited to your imagination. Adobe Photoshop Elements or Corel PaintShop Pro, just to name a few, will help you create your own masterpiece for less than $100 a software. It's great for cropping, removing redeye, removing unwanted blemishes, whitening teeth, etc.

Always try to make your image pop and draw the attention to your subject. A simple background would help a lot especially with portrait photos. Also, always focus on the eyes. Everything else would fall into place as long as the eyes are in focus.

It's not easy, I know. But, like I said earlier, if you have the right tools, plus a little practice, you can be the ONE...the one who will take photos of your nephew's birthday party, Christmas party, Halloween party, you brother's wedding, your sister's one day old daughter, your dad's 'FOR SALE' car, your spouse's cell phone for posting on Ebay, etc. For future bride and groom, it's a great gift to have from your parents since your going on a honeymoon.

Nikon D40 D-SLR Kit with Nikkor 18-55mm lens ($470)
SB-400 Speedlight ($140)

The whole arsenal above are insanely lightweight, well, almost insanely.

AVI and HANZ
One of the dilemmas I face when shooting a couple for the first time is how to break the ice. I have the camera and there is the couple, six feet away from me. So I start by letting them just do whatever, smile, look at the camera, I just press the shutter, and there goes the picture...good enough for Facebook.

It's no different with Hans and Avi. Five minutes after their first pose and I just didn't know yet what I was really looking for, and then I noticed that they were kinda shy when it comes to showing their affection. This is actual normal when you are in front of the camera for the first time with a photographer.

And so, out of the blue, I just popped the question, " Do you guys kiss?" It's actually a silly question but before I knew it, we were all laughing like crazy especially Avi who just couldn't contain it. It was a silly question to ask, I admit, but it surely became an effective ice breaker that day.

The couple was all out after that and the only problem we faced was the fading sunlight and the chilly wind. Time will never be on a wedding photographer's side but I got the job done pretty easy, thanks to Han's and Avi's cooperation.

And the kissing scene... never became a problem since.

Great wedding starts with great preparation. Jamie and Maricelle's wedding ended up that way and we really had a great time shooting their most memorable day.

I keep on telling my clients that there's no perfect wedding...unless you enjoy every moment of it. Wedding is always stressfull but if you know how to have fun, then everything gets easy and the mood becomes positive. Maricelle and Jamie did exactly what a perfect wedding should be, and so their fairytail has a happy ending.

Thanks guys for having us on board, we really had fun. Maybe I should not even mention the mouth-watering freshly broiled Mauii ribs and other great BBQ treats that were served. No, I won't mention the ice cream treat at this nice Gelato place near Venables and Powell (I think...I couldn't remember) either.

I had the opportunity of taking this picture after the soon-to-be-couple's rehearsal in Port Moody...and man it was quick. Brent and Bless had to go to Nando's Chicken for the rehearsal dinner. Anyway, I let them take off after taking a couple of shots for I know I already have the shot.

I didn't have time to prepare but I was so grateful that my clients were very cooperative and were so fun to work with. A little bit shy in the beginning but in the end I was able to get the most of it. It's always like that.

For me, it is not important that I have something to show at the reception. The best thing about engagement shoot is that come wedding day, the couple is already used to my camera, and I am already used to the couple, and it takes a lot of load off my work.

Tomorrow is their wedding day and I am sure when they see my camera, they will be posing naturally.

Vancouver weather is like a box of chocolates, YOU'LL NEVER KNOW WHAT YOU'RE GONNA GET. Elaine and Jeff scheduled this day to be their engagement shoot. Rain or shine, we're gonna do it. We got mixed weather but I was able to accomplish my mission. It did rain before and after the shoot, but it's okay. It was a bit cold though. The best part: Jeff and Elaine are natural posers, and that made my life easier.

Second Beach Sunset
The hardest part in doing engagement shoot during sunset is the fact that the sun doesn't wait for anyone to set. But as a photographer, I have to make the shots as efficient as I can in order not re-shoot later on.

In the last stages of sunset, and a few minutes after sunset, the eyes cannot see what the lens can---dust in the sky. Those are the times when you get incredible pictures. You get varying color intensities as the sunset progresses, so you really have to be quick.

Jason and Mylene doesn't really mind kissing in front of some audience. They were very cooperative and I guess the shoot went out well.

It took us two hours (from 8:30pm to 10:30pm) to complete the session which is part shooting at sunset and part shooting in complete darkness. Adding to it the 'COLD' factor and you can get pneumonia.

I hope the couple didn't get the cold the following morning.

Overall, we had fun, and that's the important thing...aside from capturing the sunset.

Lesther and Jaimee didn't want any picture that is angled. The bottom sample has two pictures that exhibit an angle close to 45 degrees either way. I wonder if I could convince these guys that the world is not round...hmmm. Maybe the couple would ask me to angle the pictures with respect to the laws of Physics and Gravity, or maybe not...whooopeeeeee! Either one would be just fine, but the Leaning Tower of Pisa became famous because for it's angle. Its has weathered over time to become 830 years old---Believe it, or not!

Like the great masters Leonardo, Donatello, Raphael, and Michelangelo (not the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), a self portrait is a must have. But unlike them I don't have to be famous and dead.

I take lots of photos, 99.9% of which is not me. I’m like a barber who can’t cut his own hair...well, almost.

I love my job and I’m happy to make everyone look their best. It's time consuming, yet very rewarding. Sometimes, I just need to take a break from my editing, grab my camera, and shoot away.

I am happy to serve Vancouver and its neighboring communities, even south of the border like Seattle, Oregon, San Francisco, Minneapolis, etc. These communities give me what I need, and I always give back in return.

REALLY TYING THE KNOT
There is no such thing as a perfect wedding. But Mike and Sandra's will be remembered as a perfect one.

My wife and I really enjoyed photographing their wedding because these guys are cool, not to mention their entourage party including the two cute little angels (flower girl and ring bearer).

After knowing each other for a while, the couple decided that it's time to tie the knot, literally, with a little help from the ring bearer, Hayden.

Hayden tied the rings together so tight, three times, that it took several minutes to untie them. I guess it's a sign that Mike and Sandra's love for each other is so tightly bound that it would take forever to separate them.
